There are three kinds of people in this world, those who said it can’t be done, those who said it won’t be done, and there are some who simply aren’t paying any attention. Whichever category you fall into, welcome to the “Dan is (finally) making a movie” blog!
A lot of people are beginning to ask what it is we’re doing, how it’s going, how much it’s going to cost etc... and this seems like the best way of keeping people informed. It should also prove a useful record of the highs and lows of the production, providing a helpful reminded of the best way to do things when we finally get our stuff together enough to do it again. It will also contain a running total of the cost, in the hope we can use it to budget better next time.
If you don’t know what the project is yet, here’s a brief rundown.
When Michael blames himself for the death of a friend, he believes he is affecting people’s destinies and so locks himself away in his house. There he sees visions of the dead friend, who accidentally inspires him to build a machine to predict the future. Michael hopes this machine will show him what he is supposed to do with his life, thereby alleviating any guilt he has for his future actions.
I know what you’re thinking and yes, I did spend most of the nineties watching late night repeats of The Outer Limits. The film is going to be somewhere between 10 and 15 minutes long and to sum up the theme (without revealing the ending) I guess it’s that “no man is an island.”
The script started life as a short story and then went through about 10 different rewrites until I was (somewhat) happy with it. I’m still tinkering with it now, but it should remain pretty much the same structure from now until the final edit.
As to where we are in the production, I’ve started shopping for props and we (Randal (the producer) and I (myself)) are spending the week meeting actors and potential crew so the next update should give you some more names to look out for . So far I’ve seen some phenomenally talented people who blew my expectations out the water, and some who made me feel like I’m the worst scriptwriter in the world. Hopefully I’ll end up with a crew of the former.
The crew list so far looks like this:
Writer/Director: Dan James
Producer: Randal Jack
Production Designer: Jayne Hyman
Editor: Jack Phillips
Storyboard Artist: Rachel Goodridge
Continuity: Sarah Watkeys
Many thanks to all of you for making time to work on this with me! I’m going to make this blog available to all of them who want to post on it, so you might be hearing for any and all of them as things go forward.
Finally, in each blog I’m hoping to include a “Things I have learned” so I guess I’ll start this week on this topic:
1. Talented people are willing to work for free (or at least expenses) if you only ask them.
Costs this week:
Props: £7
Travel to London: £40
Venue Hire: £20
Total cost: £67
